American Idol keeps their live iTunes downloads a secret, so they won't tip off viewers as to which performance was more popular that week. But now that Idol contestants are being allowed to have Facebook and Twitter accounts, will the amount of their followers be an indication on how well they are doing in the competition?

At the time of this post, even before one live performance has been seen, the men already have more followers than the women. Andre W. Garcia is the top male with 6,026 followers, and Didi Benami (1,391 followers) barely edges out Katie Stevens (1,239 followers) as the top woman/girl. Contestants with less airtime like Joe Munoz (480 followers), Michelle Delamor (26 followers) and Paige Miles (419 followers) seem to be at the bottom of the pack.
Yet somehow, Tim Urban, who replaced the booted Chris Golightly, managed to nab 1,061 followers. Maybe because of all the free press due to Golightly's early exit?
Of course the number of Twitter and Facebook followers won't help us determine the results each week, but it will be fun to see how much influence -- if any -- social media sites have on the competition.
Here is a list of the Top 24's follower count as of February 19, 2010.
